VietNamNet Bridge – The wholesale market of Phu Hau opens from 1-6 am to supply goods for markets in the central city of Hue and neighboring districts. Most of workers at the market are women.

At 1 am, Nguyen Thi Hanh, 47 from Phu Cat district, was arranging flowers to

prepare for the new market day. Hanh said she had to go to the market at 12 am

to prepare goods for the International Women’s Day (March 8).

At 1.30, the market is crowded.

Most of traders and porters are women.

Truong Thi Loc, 75, has worked at the market for more than 30 years. She said

she often gets up at 1 am and pedals a bicycle for 5km to arrive at the market at 2 am.

To not be sleepy, they have to drink coffee.

Stalls for fish are also very crowded.

Women work as porters at the market. They earn VND500-1000 ($0.025-0.050)/time,

depending on the stretch of road.
