During the Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet, it is a tradition for Vietnamese families to put up ornamental plants both outside and around their house to liven up the atmosphere, and to express wishes of good luck, happiness, and prosperity in the new year. Kumquat trees in a garden owned by Nguyen Van Thanh in Van Giang district of Hung Yen province go on sale with hundreds of new models. Unique trophy-shaped kumquat trees created to celebrate the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar prove hugely attractive to shoppers this year. A kumquat tree shaped like the World Cup stands at 3.2 metres high. Gardener Thanh says he loves football and it takes time to create a bonsai tree with a unique shape. Such a bonsai tree in the photo costs VND18 million. Around 20 love-shaped kumquat trees are also put on sale in Thanh’s garden. Each heart-shaped kumquat tree is over 2 metres high. A vase-shaped kumquat tree is around two to 3.8 metres high and has diameter of 1.5 metres. Each vase-shaped kumquat tree costs between VND20 - 25 million. During Tet it is believed that the more fruits on a kumquat tree inside a house then the more luck will come to the owner ahead in the new year.
