Paul, the oracle octopus who made a fame in the World Cup this summer for his incredible ability to predict the results of Germany's matches, has died at his home in Oberhausen at the age of two.

A two year-old octopus Paul, the so-called "octopus oracle" predicts Germany's victory in their 2010 World Cup quarter-final soccer match against Argentina by choosing a mussel, from a glass box with the German flag instead of a glass box with the Argentinian flag, at the Sea Life Aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen June 29, 2010. "Management and staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Center were devastated to discover that oracle octopus Paul, who achieved global renown during the recent World Cup, had passed away overnight," the aquarium said in a statement.

English-born Paul made headlines across the globe after he correctly forecast the outcomes of Germany's seven matches.

After Germany's semifinal defeat, Paul tipped Spain to beat the Netherlands in the final, which proved correct again.

For the prediction, two boxes were lowered into the salty soothsayer's tank, each containing a mussel and the flags of the two opposing teams. The box Paul picked first was deemed the likely winner.
