Vu Thi Hang came home with a silver medal in the women’s 48 kg freestyle event at the World Junior Wrestling Championships, which was wrapped up in Thailand on September 9.

This is the third time in recent years that Vietnam has won a silver medal in the tournament.

Hang received a wild card to progress to the second round, where she defeated Poland’s Sara Jezierzanska 3-0. She then provided one of the surprises of the competition with an emphatic 9-0 victory over Honduras’s Brendayamyleth Bailey Gomez in the quarterfinal.

Her fine form continued in the semifinal with a 4-1 win over Hungary’s Mercedesz Denes. She was rewarded with a place in the final against Japan’s Yuki Irie, but her opponent proved too strong and recorded a 6-0 victory to secure the gold.

Hang’s success helped Vietnam finish the tournament placed 17th out of the 28 participating teams.
