Ms. Hoai at hospital.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hoai, 24, from the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum suffers from gentle mental disease. Her husband, Le Van Duong, 44, is dumb after a fire. They got married last October. The wife immediately became pregnant. The two families were very happy.
On May 8, the couple went to Kon Tum Obstetrics Hospital for a scan. Doctors said that the fetus was 33 weeks old and suffered from various deforms: short limbs, big head, bowel contraction, etc.
The woman was scanned again and the above result was confirmed. Doctors told the woman to have an abortion.
On May 12, the woman had another scan at a private clinic in Kon Tum city. A similar conclusion was made.
Eleven days later, the family decided to have an abortion. On May 19, at the assistance of doctors, the woman had a premature birth, giving birth to a 2.6kg baby. At birth, the baby was still alive and did not have any outside deform. The family asked doctors to give first aid to save the baby.
After giving emergency aid to the baby, doctors performed a scan and insisted that the baby had inside defects.
On May 21, the baby was scanned again. Doctors concluded that the baby suffered from serious deforms inside. The baby died the next day.
The family lodged a complaint against the hospital.
“Doctors said that according to scan results, the baby had short limbs, big head, did not have anus, etc. but when the baby looked normal at birth. The baby could urinate and had an anus. We lost our trust in doctors! We hoped that the baby would be the mainstay of the poor couple,” said Mr. Le Ngoc Phuong, the baby’s uncle.
This is the second baby who lost the chance to live because of wrong scan results.
Ten days ago, a woman in Gia Lai province had premature birth, with doctors’ assistance, owing to wrong scan result of deforms. But the baby did not have any deform at birth. Doctors did not check the baby but put her into a plastic bag for burial. At the cemetery, the family found out that the baby was still alive. They brought the baby back to the hospital for emergency aid but doctors could not rescue her.
