The bus attracted much attention after it parked in front of the dormitory of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. Most of the customers are students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
23-year-old Dang Minh Man, the shop manager, said, "We used to operate a similar shop before. We offered barber service on a van so it was very small. The owner, Nguyen Hoai Thanh, suggested finding an old bus and turned it into a barbershop."
The old bus had 30 seats. After it was bought, all of the interior was removed. It took them a whole month to redecorate the bus so that it can serve six customers at a time. They serve 70 to 100 students a day. The dormitory managers also allowed the bus to park in front of the dormitory from 8 am to 9 pm.
"We wanted to provide some support to other people because 2020 has been such a difficult year. We hope we can help the students save some of their money," Man said.
Nguyen Van Dung, born in 2000, said, "It usually cost VND60,000 (USD2.6) to VND70,000 at a barbershop. Now we can save money. The barbers are very skillful too."
Another student, Tran Hoang Phuc, said he really liked the street style and decoration of the bus. That's what attracted him in the first place.
"The students' enthusiasm is a motivation," Man said, "Most of the barbers didn't go to the university so each customer is a joy to us. We use the profits from other barbershops to support this barber bus."
A second bus is already being prepared and decorated, while they also have plans for a third and fourth barber bus.
