Tran Xuan Yen, former deputy director of the provincial Department of Education and Training |
Yen had earlier been charged with abusing his position and power while on duty and was placed under house arrest.
According to investigators, Yen has changed his statement, hindering the investigation process.
On the third day of the hearing on the 2018 high-school test score rigging scam in Son La on October 17, Yen said he made the statement under duress.
According to the indictment for the case, for the 2018 national high school exam, Yen was appointed as vice chairman of the exam council and deputy head of the test paper marking board of the province. Yen received information on 15 students to alter the scores on their exam papers.
He declared he had received information on eight other students from Hoang Tien Duc, former director of the Son La Department of Education and Training.
The provincial police have also filed charges against Lo Van Huynh, former head of the Testing and Quality Assurance Division, under the provincial Department of Education and Training, for allegedly receiving bribes and against Lo Thi Truong, Huynh’s niece, for allegedly giving bribes.
In court, Truong claimed she had begged Huynh to check the scores of her son, but she later admitted to giving him VND300 million.
As this confession could indicate bribery, the Son La People’s Court on October 18 decided to return the case to the provincial police for further investigation. SGT
