Following the success of the first year of NZSS in 2019, the 2020 initiative sees an increase in the number of scholarships from 36 to 40.

The scholarships provide a 50% subsidy on the school tuition fees for the first year of study and are designed to target outstanding Vietnamese students with the required passion and competency to experience New Zealand’s world-class education offering. 

New Zealand has become an attractive destination for Vietnamese students in recent years. In 2018 there were more than 2,700 Vietnamese students in New Zealand; and the number of Vietnamese secondary school students studying in New Zealand increased by 39 per cent compared to the previous year.

Much of this growth can be attributed to New Zealand’s strong education system which takes a high-quality, innovative teaching approach, enabling all students to gain the skills and knowledge to grow and contribute to the world.

“For the past two years, New Zealand has been ranked as the world’s top English-speaking country in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Educating for the Future Index. Specifically, our schools offer new ways of learning and equip students with the creative and critical thinking skills necessary for a successful career. Students enjoy a balance of theoretical and practical learning in safe learning environments, allowing themselves to be challenged to reach their full potential,” said Mr. John Laxon, ENZ’s Regional Director, Asia.

“The first cohort of Vietnamese school scholarship recipients have impressed New Zealand teachers with their tenacity, academic performance, and vision of how they want to prepare for the future that will better themselves, their families, and their communities. We are happy to continue providing significant scholarship opportunities to high-performing Vietnamese students. All 40 schools joining the programme are highly regarded institutions, providing Vietnamese students with a wide range of great choices across different regions in New Zealand,” Laxon said.

Last year we signed Collaboration Arrangements with the Departments of Education & Training (DoET) in Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, which has laid a great foundation to deliver key education initiatives. The NZSS highlights New Zealand’s continuing commitment to support Vietnamese students,” said H.E. Wendy Matthews, the New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam.
