Traffic accidents have claimed the lives of 121 people during the four days of Tết (Lunar New Year) starting on February 14, according to the National Committee for Traffic Safety.

Another 120 were injured as 155 accidents occurred in that period.
In just 24 hours from 7am on the New Year’s Day on the 16th 34 people were killed and 36 were injured.
The main causes of the accidents were drunk driving and speeding, the committee said, adding that most of the accidents took place in suburban and rural areas.
One of them involved a bus going from Đà Lạt to Dầu Giây crashing into a motorcycle headed in the opposite direction, killing Nguyễn Thị Thúy Hằng, 21 and Nguyễn Thị Thu Nguyệt, 52, who were on it.
The accident occurred at 11am on February 16 in Đồng Nai Province’s Định Quán District.
At 6.30pm on the same day two motorcycles crashed into each other in Cà Mau Province, killing three persons who were in their 20s and injuring a 16-year-old.
On the first two days of the new year the police issued 1,545 tickets for traffic violations, seized 746 vehicles and slapped fines of more than VNĐ413 million.—VNS
