Vietnamese track-and-field athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh

Nguyen Manh Hung, general secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation, said that the nation will send 16 athletes, including SEA Games champions, as well as six coaches, to participate at the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from July 12 to July 16.

There will be a total of nine Vietnamese athletes attending the short distances, including Ngan Ngoc Nghia and Tran Thi Nhi Yen in the 100m and 200m; Nguyen Thi Huyen, Nguyen Thi Hang, Tran Nhat Hoang, Tran Dinh Son, and Nguyen Thi Ngoc in the 400m and relay; along with Bui Thi Nguyen and Huynh Thi My Tien.

In the middle distances, the country will send a total of six athletes, including Luong Duc Phuoc in the 800m and 1,500m, Nguyen Thi Thu Ha in the 800m, Pham Thi Hong Le in the 5,000m and 10,000m, Nguyen Trung Cuong in the 3,000m with obstacles, Nguyen Tien Trong in the long jump, and Bui Thi Thu Thao in the long jump.

Most notably, potential athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh has yet to register for any event. It is therefore likely that the athlete will be selected to compete in the 1,500m and 3,000m with obstacles. This comes after Oanh made history with four golds gained at the SEA Games 32 in Cambodia. At the ASIAD 18, Oanh also won a bronze medal in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase.

The trip to Thailand will present a golden opportunity for local athletes to both train and gain experience as they prepare for the Asian Games (ASIAD) 19, which is scheduled to take place in China in September. VOV
