Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety Truong Hoa Binh released the figures at a memorial ceremony for the victims of traffic accidents held in the northern province of Hai Duong on November 18.
The Deputy PM said some 962 of the injured were children.
There were 153 fewer deaths, equivalent to a 2.2% drop compared to the same period in 2017, and 1,732 fewer injuries, down 13%.
At the event, Binh called on people to strictly obey traffic laws. He also expressed his deep condolences to families with traffic accident victims.
Khuat Viet Hung, deputy chairman of the committee pointed out that it is bad awareness that is among the major causes for the high number of traffic accidents in Vietnam, particularly drunk driving. Another issue was poor road quality, while the Road Maintenance Fund has still failed to deal with the issue.
This year, Vietnam has set a goal to cut traffic accidents by 5-10% compared to last year.
