From National Assembly elections to trade to the East Sea dispute: it’s been a turbulent year. Let's look at some of 2016’s top news events and most striking photographs.
 With a spirit of Solidarity-Democracy-Discipline-Renovation, the 12th National Party Congress, Jan. 20-28, 2016 re-elects Nguyen Phu Trong General Secretary of the Communist Party.  Millions gather on the Death Anniversary of the Hung Kings (April 16, 2016) at the Thuong Temple on Nghia Linh Mountain, Phu Tho Province to burn incense and worship their ancestors.  A record number of voters turn out to cast their ballot for deputies to the 14th National Assembly and People's Councils for the 2016-2021 tenure.  On May 23, 2016 US President Barack Obama dines at the Huong Lien Restaurant on Le Van Huu Street in Hanoi. He orders Bun Cha (grilled pork and noodles).  US President Barack Obama on May 25, 2016 meets with members of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative at the GEM Centre in Ho Chi Minh City.  Thousands attend a memorial service on June 30, 2016 in Hanoi for nine crewmembers of the CASA 212 who perish when their aircraft crashes while searching for a comrade killed in an earlier accident.  Typhoon Mirinae, the first to hit Vietnam in 2016, leaves a trail of death and destruction in northern Vietnam after it rolls into the mainland in the early morning hours of July 27, 2016.  A four-storey building located at 43 Cua Bac Street in Hanoi collapses at 3:15am on August 4, 2016, killing two, injuring five, trapping many others in the rubble.  Ho Chi Minh City is at the epicentre of historic 40 year floods; the deluge results in untold damages ranging in the tens of billions of US dollars.  On October 1, 2016 tens of thousands of fish are found dead and floating on the waters of West Lake, the largest fresh water reservoir in Hanoi.  Prolonged heavy rains on October 14-15, 2016 inundate streets and residential areas in the central provinces of Nghe An and Quang Binh.  On November 1, 2016, a fiery blaze destroys a building located at 39-45 Tran Thai Tong Street in the Cau Giay District of Hanoi, killing 13, causing substantial property losses to surrounding structures.  In December 2016 floods from a tropical depression wreak havoc across Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa provinces forcing schools and business to shut down, leaving millions without electrical power. |
