Bui Anh Tuan, Director of the Ministry’s Higher Education Department, said the ministry has received proposals by nearly 30 universities to renew admissions for around 100 training courses.

However, as of March 4, the ministry has decided to allow admissions to be renewed for 62 courses. They will send an official document to universities about continued suspension of admission for other courses.

Earlier, on January 25, the ministry decided to suspend new admissions for 207 university courses at 71 universities beginning this year due to the shortage of teachers.

“The move was aimed at increasing training quality and is expected to force universities to consolidate their staff. Any learning institutions that fail to meet requirements must suspend new admissions, and those that fail to improve the situation would have their licenses revoked,” Tuan said.

Most to be affected by the new admissions rules are humanities courses.

The Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Bui Van Ga, said that they had been gentle with these two sectors in order to facilitate universities to renew admissions.

“Universities that provide training courses for music and theatre majors must have teachers with doctorates. However, if it’s too hard for them to recruit, they are allowed to employ doctors who specialised in related fields,” he added.
