The six routes currently using the “green wave” model are Hue, Hang Bai, Tran Hung Dao, Tran Phu, Nguyen Thai Hoc, and Quan Su streets. At key intersections, AI cameras are mounted to capture full traffic flow and transmit live data to the city’s central control center.

At Tran Phu Street during the evening rush hour, beginning around 5 p.m., cameras capture high traffic volumes and relay information instantly. The system’s software analyzes and adjusts light cycles automatically, reducing congestion and maintaining steady vehicle movement.
According to Hanoi’s Traffic Police Division, the results stem from the integration of AI-based signal control that can both establish “green wave” sequences and automatically identify potential bottlenecks. The system also detects monitored vehicles and flexibly lengthens or shortens signal phases based on real-time traffic density.
The system’s efficiency marks a major upgrade over previous methods, cutting average travel time by 31%, increasing average speeds, and significantly reducing the number of stops at intersections.
Another feature allows AI cameras to recognize police escort vehicles on duty. When a convoy is detected, the system instantly switches lights to green, ensuring priority movement.
On December 13, the Hanoi Police officially launched the city’s Traffic Control Center, which also handles administrative violations electronically. The center includes three core systems: a road traffic safety violation management system, a smart adaptive signal control system, and a public order management system.
A total of 1,837 cameras are connected to 188 signal control cabinets across the city, enabling full integration with the AI traffic management network.
These cameras can detect up to 28 types of traffic violations, including running red lights, not wearing helmets, failing to use seat belts, or using phones while driving.
Authorities believe the AI-enabled control center will transform road safety awareness and urban discipline, while helping alleviate congestion at 195 intersections citywide.
