More than 7,000 runners will take part in the first HCM City Marathon on January 14, The event hass been renamed from the annual HCM City Run held since 2013.

Pulse Active company, the race organiser, said the new event would be divided into a full marathon (42km), a half marathon (21km) and other events over 10km, 5km and 3km. Longer distances will pass over Phú Mỹ Hưng Bridge.

“We hope to create a more active sporting community as well as develop tourism and sport,” said managing director of Pulse Active, Bady Pham.

“The race will showcase the dynamism of the city to the world. The Việt Nam National Administration of Tourism will highlight the event as one of the key sport programmes in 2018,” he said.

He hoped the marathon would become an annual event for Vietnamese and foreigners, including those living overseas.

Past events drew from 5,000 to 8,000 participants a year.

Pulse Active company has organised many events in Việt Nam, including the annual Đà Nẵng International Marathon, Challenge Việt and Le Fruit Triathlon, Colour Me Run and PRISMA-The Night Run, as well as Kelly Rowland, T-Pain, Zedd and recently The Chainsmokers.
