The landslide occurred in Phin Chai village of A Lu commune, Lao Cai province, at 3a.m., said Sung A Khu, head of the A Lu communal administration.

Heavy rain caused a large amount of earth and rock to fall down on the homes of four households in the village, leaving seven people missing, said the official.

Rescue forces rushed to the scene to assist people with rescue work. They moved the 12 remaining residents of the four affected houses and other residents in the village to safe locations.

Rescue workers are now combing through the debris to look for the missing.

On September 8, a landslide also hit Muong Hoa commune of Sa Pa town, Lao Cai province, killing 6 local residents.

Typhoon Yagi slammed into northern Vietnam on September 7, bringing strong winds and heavy rain.

Though weakening Yagi has moved into Laos and dissipated, heavy rain is continuing to fall, threatening mountainous localities.

Meteorologists have warned these localities about a high risk of flash floods and landslides in the coming days.
