Apple is expected to launch a foldable iPhone next year, featuring a design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and incorporating numerous technologies from the iPhone 17 Air.
Recently, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg confirmed that Apple would introduce a foldable iPhone in 2026.
Design inspired by Galaxy Z Fold

Previously, various sources reported that Apple had been researching foldable devices. According to Gurman, the foldable iPhone's design will resemble the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold rather than the clamshell style.
Gurman stated that the foldable iPhone would integrate several technologies from the iPhone 17 Air, Apple's upcoming ultra-thin model. The iPhone 17 Air, expected to be one of Apple's thinnest devices ever, might set a new record for slimness - measuring just 5.5 mm thick.
However, the ultra-thin design comes with some compromises, such as the absence of speakers and a camera. Despite these omissions, the iPhone 17 Air still delivers a complete iPhone experience, including impressive battery life.
In essence, the iPhone 17 Air serves as a test for component arrangement in an ultra-thin device—an essential step toward developing a foldable iPhone.
Special hinge with liquid metal
Previously, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that Apple plans to use liquid metal in the foldable iPhone’s hinge to improve durability and reduce screen creasing.
Apple intends to adopt liquid metal, a material produced through pressure casting, as the primary component to address common issues in foldable devices. This design ensures a flatter screen and significantly minimizes the typical creasing at the folding point.
Kuo noted that Apple has previously used liquid metal in small components like SIM ejector tools, but this will be the first time it applies the material to a critical mechanical part. Dongguan EonTec has been selected as Apple’s exclusive liquid metal supplier.
Specifications and pricing
According to earlier reports, the foldable iPhone will feature a 7.8-inch main display when unfolded and a 5.5-inch outer screen. Kuo predicts it will come with two rear cameras, a front-facing camera, and integrate Touch ID into the power button. When opened, the device will be just 4.5 mm thick, and when folded, it will measure around 9 to 9.5 mm.
Though details remain limited, Gurman speculates that the foldable iPhone will be priced around $2,000. The manufacturing process may face challenges, leading to limited supply during the initial launch phase. If everything goes according to plan, mass production could begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, meaning the foldable iPhone may be launched by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
