Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed satisfaction with the strong and effective development of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Australia, noting that the two countries have been implementing joint projects and cooperation activities on schedule.

Bilateral trade between the two nations has seen stable growth, reaching over USD 14 billion in 2024. Both sides have actively worked to open their agricultural markets. Notably, Vietnamese passion fruit was exported to Australia for the first time, while Australian plums are now available in Vietnam.

Registered Australian FDI into Vietnam has surpassed USD 3 billion. The Prime Minister highly appreciated Australia's decision to increase its Official Development Assistance (ODA) to Vietnam to AUD 96.6 million (approximately USD 63 million).

He emphasized the great potential for cooperation, urging both countries to continue implementing the action program under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and regularly organizing dialogue and consultation mechanisms. The goal is to soon achieve USD 20 billion in bilateral trade, particularly by facilitating market access for each other’s products.

The Prime Minister also called for stronger cooperation in defense and security, especially in cybersecurity, digital transformation, and equipment support to enhance Vietnam’s capabilities.

Prime Minister Chinh shared Vietnam’s strategic vision for developing science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation, and hoped for breakthroughs in bilateral cooperation in these areas.

Looking back to move forward

Foreign Minister Penny Wong remarked that now is a significant moment for both countries to reflect on their shared history and shape future cooperation. The Australian government values Vietnam’s role in the region and bilateral relations.

The two countries share common perspectives on bilateral, regional, and international issues, providing a strong foundation for expanding cooperation and mutual support.

Minister Wong affirmed her commitment to deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, particularly through defense-security cooperation, science and technology, digital transformation, innovation, education and training, and human resource development via ODA projects and investment funds.

At the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and Minister Penny Wong discussed bilateral cooperation implementation as well as regional and global issues. Both sides were pleased with the rapid and comprehensive development of ties since upgrading to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The relationship is advancing across six pillars, yielding practical outcomes.

Notably, political relations and high-level exchanges have been effectively maintained, and bilateral cooperation mechanisms are held regularly.

Deputy PM Bui Thanh Son welcomed Australia’s continued implementation of its Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040 in Vietnam and proposed breakthroughs in cooperation on science, technology, and innovation.

Minister Wong expressed hope that Vietnam would continue facilitating Australian business investment, especially in high-tech industries. She also proposed expanding cooperation in climate change, green growth, energy transition, digital transformation, and innovation.

Australia will continue supporting Vietnam in research and development of new and green technologies, developing energy and digital infrastructure, and strengthening human resource capacity through ODA and investments.

Deputy PM Bui Thanh Son welcomed Australia’s ODA increase, including a recent AUD 50 million package for practical initiatives and projects across multiple sectors in the Mekong Subregion.
