Jeffrey Zirlin - co-founder and head of the growth division of Sky Mavis - said that Korea is one of the most important game markets in the world. Axie Infinity aims to double the number of its players there.
Sky Mavis is trying to make its game to be more suitable for Korean players.
"We wanted to localize the game. Not many Koreans use English. This is a barrier for Axie Infinity," Jeffrey Zirlin said.
He said that Korea has the best gamers in the world. Many of the top Axie Infinity players are from Korea. However, a barrier for expansion of Axie Infinity there is that the Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee has banned the release of play-to-earn games in the country.
In December 2021, the Korean Government also banned play-to-earn Blockchain games on two popular app markets - Google Play and App Store.
However, the co-founder of Sky Mavis still hopes to negotiate with the Korean government to make the country change its stance.
Axie Infinity recently launched a new version called Origin. The new version does not require players to spend money to buy characters. Gamers can join the game with three free characters. So far, 800,000 players have signed up to use the new version. Axie Infinity is still in its early stages, and has not yet launched on Google Play and App Store.
Since a serious hack this March, along with the downtrend in the cryptocurrency market, the number of Axie Infinity players has been plummeting. According to the latest statistics, there are about 766,000 Axie Infinity players globally, compared to about 2.7 million players in early 2022.
