The BL590 flight of low-cost carrier Jetstar Pacific from HCM City to Da Nang took off at 2.55pm.

Forty-five minutes later, when the plane lowered altitude to prepare for landing at the Da Nang airport, a female passenger named Nguyen  Thi Ngoc Nga, 26, began labor, although she was only in the 32nd week.

After the announcement calling for the assistance of passengers on the flight, a foreign doctor joined the crew to help the woman give birth safely to a 2.7 kg baby boy.

The flight captain contacted the Danang airport authorities asking for support. After the plane landed at the airport, the passenger and her baby were immediately transported to the Danang Obstetrics Hospital.

A representative of Jetstar Pacific said this is the first case of childbirth at an altitude of 10,000 meters on a Jetstar Pacific flight.

On January 16, 2011, a passenger gave birth to a baby boy when a Jetstar Pacific plane was on its way to the runway at Tan Son Nhat Airport, HCM City to fly to Vinh City.

Three of them hugged to congratulate and then Dr. Fiona carried the baby in her arm. Tran Thi Hue said that in over 23 years of working as a stewardess, she had never faced with passengers giving birth  in a flight yet being a mother.

Giving birth in flights is dangerous for the lives of mother and baby as there is no proper medical devices; moreover, the fetus was only 30 weeks old; so I sometimes held my breath when seeing the mother nearly fell to sleep, she added.

Dr. Fiona said that by the way she and her family made a trip to Hoi An, she visited the hospital to visit the mother who she helped to delivered on the flight.

Being a doctor yet she had not faced with the situation like this before; accordingly, it is a very memorable trip for me, Fiona said.

The baby has the nickname Jetstar as a memory of the flight.

The airline decided to give free tickets to the baby until he will be 20 years old. SGGP
