Nearly 28,000 patient visits

From its opening on June 26 through July 9, Bach Mai Hospital's Ninh Binh campus recorded 27,598 outpatient visits, averaging more than 2,300 patients per day. On its busiest day, the hospital received nearly 3,000 patients.

To meet growing demand, the hospital has operated its diagnostic and laboratory services at high capacity. During the first 12 days, it processed more than 204,000 laboratory test samples, carried out over 24,000 ultrasound examinations, nearly 17,700 diagnostic imaging procedures - including X-rays, CT scans and MRI scans - and almost 11,900 functional assessments, including around 1,500 gastrointestinal endoscopies.

The Department of Pathology processed more than 1,100 tissue samples, while the blood bank supplied 823 units of blood and blood products for patient care.

In clinical treatment, the hospital performed 395 surgeries, including 98 critical emergency operations, and more than 12,100 medical procedures. A total of 2,434 patients were admitted for inpatient care, with more than 1,000 still receiving treatment. Bed occupancy has exceeded 100%, reflecting the new facility's rapid ability to meet local healthcare demand.

Preserving the "golden hour" for patients

Associate Professor Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that beyond the high patient volume, the Ninh Binh campus has quickly demonstrated its clinical capability by successfully treating a number of critically ill and emergency patients.

On its opening day, June 26, the hospital admitted a patient with a severe spinal injury after a high fall, facing the risk of spinal cord compression and paralysis of both lower limbs. An emergency response was activated immediately, with specialists from multiple departments coordinating to take the patient into surgery. The spinal decompression procedure was successful, preserving neurological function and maintaining the patient's chance of regaining mobility.

Just one day later, two patients suffering acute ischemic stroke underwent successful vessel recanalization within the critical "golden hour." Receiving treatment locally significantly reduced their risk of death and long-term disability.

The hospital also saved the life of a 43-year-old man who suffered an acute heart attack while taking his child to Hanoi for medical treatment. He underwent emergency coronary angiography and coronary intervention at the Ninh Binh campus, allowing doctors to promptly restore blood flow, preserve heart muscle and minimize complications.

According to Dao Xuan Co, reducing the distance between patients and healthcare facilities capable of providing advanced treatment is a decisive factor in many emergencies. When specialized procedures are available locally, the precious "golden hour" can be preserved, improving patients' chances of survival and recovery.

Immediately after opening, the Ninh Binh campus simultaneously introduced advanced techniques across emergency medicine, intensive care, stroke treatment, interventional cardiology, interventional radiology, surgery and anesthesiology.

These early results demonstrate the effectiveness of the "Two Campuses – One Hospital – One Professional Standard" model, which ensures unified specialist teams, clinical protocols and management systems across Bach Mai Hospital's two campuses.

In the coming period, hospital leaders said the facility will continue investing in specialized departments, expanding advanced medical technologies, accelerating digital transformation, promoting scientific research and strengthening international cooperation. It will also reinforce its role as a special-grade hospital by training healthcare professionals, transferring advanced medical technologies and providing technical support to regional healthcare facilities.

The launch of Bach Mai Hospital's Ninh Binh campus not only enables local residents to access high-quality healthcare closer to home, but also helps ease pressure on central-level hospitals while laying the foundation for an advanced medical center serving the southern Red River Delta region.
