After 12 years of construction, Ho Chi Minh City’s Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien) will officially begin operations on December 22. The urban railway, with an investment of over 43.7 trillion VND, will run nearly 200 trips daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., providing a modern and efficient transport option for the city’s residents.
The metro line comprises 17 trains, each with three carriages and a total length of 61.5 meters. Designed to accommodate up to 930 passengers, including 147 seated and 783 standing, the trains can reach speeds of 110 km/h on elevated tracks and 80 km/h in tunnels.
During peak hours (6–8 a.m., 11 a.m.–12 p.m., and 3:30–6 p.m.), trains will operate at eight-minute intervals, with nine trains running simultaneously to accommodate increased passenger demand.
“Staff have been trained extensively in customer service, operations, and emergency response to ensure the safety and satisfaction of passengers,” said Van Thi Huu Tam, Deputy Director of HURC1, the operating company.
In the first month, rides will be free for all passengers. Following this, daily tickets will cost 40,000 VND for unlimited trips, and a three-day pass will cost 90,000 VND. Monthly passes will be available for 300,000 VND, with a 50% discount for students.
For single journeys, fares range from 7,000 to 20,000 VND depending on the distance, or 6,000 to 19,000 VND for cashless payments. Accepted payment methods include cash, coins, and domestic or international bank cards. Passengers can also pay via Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay.
Metro Line 1 incorporates features to support passengers with disabilities, including ramps for wheelchairs, elevators, escalators, and dedicated restrooms. Signs in large print and Braille cater to the visually impaired, while loudspeakers ensure clear audio announcements.
Personalized assistance is also available, with staff trained to help passengers from entry to boarding. This includes guiding visually impaired passengers, assisting with wheelchairs, or aiding those with mobility challenges.
To enhance connectivity, Metro Line 1 integrates with other transportation modes, including buses, taxis, and bicycles. The system aims to provide a seamless travel experience across the city.
With its modern infrastructure and accessible design, the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien Metro Line marks a significant milestone in HCMC’s efforts to modernize public transport and improve mobility for all.
