Recently, after rainy days, the tourist wharf was full of hazardous waste, which cannot decompose. It included packaging, plastic bags, food cans and food containers. The waste was floating on the sea surface.

"Part of the waste is discharged by fish breeders. They usually throw animal feed wrapping into the sea. After rains or high tide, rubbish washes to shore," a local said.

Local residents also said that tourists discharge a lot of waste on the island.

One can see tons of rubbish along the roads and at other places on the island.

A local official said that more than 1 ton of garbage is discharged from nearly 1,000 families on the island each day. There are five teams of 30 people who specializein collecting waste on the island. However the island does not have a waste treatment facility yet, so the garbage is burned in a hole of nearly 30 m wide and dozens of meters deep, which is located over 5 km from the residential area.
