Three Vietnamese tourists were killed in Egypt when a roadside bomb blast hit their tour bus near the country’s world-famous Giza pyramids at 18:15 of December 28 (local time), affirmed the Vietnamese Embassy in Egypt.

According to the embassy, there were 18 people on the bus at that time, including 15 Vietnamese tourists and three Egyptians. Besides the three Vietnamese victims, one Egyptian guide was also killed.

Right after the incident occurred, Egypt’s authorised officials brought the victims to El-Haram hospital in Giza province.

Vietnamese Ambassador Tran Thanh Cong visited the wounded victims at the hospital, and worked with local officials, including Tourism Minister Rania Al-Mashat and Health Minister Hala Zayed, to seek solutions to the case.

He asked the Egyptian side to create favourable conditions to repatriate the Vietnamese victims and tourists as soon as possible, and soon arrange meetings with local authorised agencies to carry out citizen protection to ensure the legitimate interests of Vietnamese citizens.

He shared that the Egyptian side had promised to facilitate the repatriation of Vietnamese visitors who are not injured, and create all favourable conditions in terms of necessary procedures for the deceased.

Egypt’s interior ministry said the bus was hit by an explosion from an improvised device hidden near a wall on Mariyutiya street in Al-Haram district.

Egyptian Prosecutor-General Nabil Sadek then requested an immediate investigation into the deadly bomb attack.

The Vietnamese Embassy in Egypt has visited wounded Vietnamese tourists in a roadside bomb blast in the country and worked with local authorities to ask for measures to support treatment for the injured and facilitate Vietnamese citizens’ safe return.

Of the 12 Vietnamese injuries, 10 are seriously injured and being treated in hospital, while two others with minor injuries were brought to the Embassy for care.

Vietnamese Ambassador Tran Thanh Cong immediately visited the wounded victims at Al Haram hospital as well as the scene of the explosion. 

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli also visited the victims at the hospital. 

Ambassador Cong worked with Egyptian health and tourism ministers, asking them to take measures to support treatment for the victims and facilitate Vietnamese citizens’ return soon.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam contacted the Egyptian Embassy in Vietnam, proposing granting emergency visas to relatives of the victims, in order to help them to come Egypt soon to coordinate with related parties to solve interests of the victims.

The Ministry also instructed the Vietnamese Embassy in Egypt to continue keeping close watch on the situation and work closely with local authorised agencies to ensure legitimate rights of Vietnamese citizens.

PM extends sympathy to families of victims in Egypt’s deadly bomb blast

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has conveyed sympathy to the families of victims in a deadly roadside bomb blast in Egypt on December 28.

The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) to conduct citizen protection, support treatment for the injured and facilitate conditions for their relatives to come Egypt to perform relevant procedures.

Vietnam strongly condemns the terror act that killed and injured many Vietnamese nationals. Vietnam requests Egyptian authorities to carry out an inspection to look for and mete out fitting punishment to attackers, the ministry’s spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said.

She said on December 29 that Vietnam highly appreciates cooperation from the government and people of Egypt in helping treatment and citizen protection for the Vietnamese victims.

Vietnam calls on countries to join hands to fight terrorism to ensure the peaceful life and safe travelling for citizens across around the world, she added.

Egyptian PM visits injured Vietnamese tourists in roadside bomb

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli on late December 28 visited Vietnamese tourists wounded in a roadside bomb blast that killed three other Vietnamese the same day.

He said Egyptian officials contacted with the Vietnamese Embassy, and the Egyptian tourism minister would meet with the Vietnamese Ambassador in Cairo soon.

The PM emphasised medical assistance for the tourists as the most important thing to do.

The incident occurred when a bus carrying a group of Vietnamese tourists along with a guide and a driver of Egypt was hit by a roadside bomb at 18:15 (23:15 of December 28, Hanoi time).

The improvised explosive device was placed near a wall along the Mariyutiya Street in Al-Haram district near the Giza Pyramids.

According to the Vietnamese Embassy, there were 18 people on the bus at that time, including 15 Vietnamese and three Egyptians.

The Egyptian side confirmed an Egyptian was killed along with the three Vietnamese tourists in the bomb attack.

After the attack, all victims were rushed to El-Haram hospital in Giza province.

No militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Armed security personnel quickly deployed to the site and cordoned off the area for inspection.
