Khai Nguyen Pagoda was first built in the first half of the 16th century, but seriously deteriorated in 1990.
In 2003 the site was rebuilt before reopening again for monks and nuns, as well as Buddhist followers from across the country.
In 2015, Venerable Thich Dao Thinh began to erect a statue of Amitabha Buddha, featuring a message of world peace.
The statue stands at 72 metres high and spans an area of 1,200 square metres.
Construction of the statue has been suspended for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project is now underway and is expected to be completed in the next few years.
The current ceiling of Khai Nguyen Pagoda is being elaborately painted by many artists.
Thousands of small Buddha statues are all cast by monks in the pagoda.
