The mountainous and midland province of Phu Tho has the fourth largest tea growing area in Vietnam.

According to the Phu Tho Agricultural Extension Center, the tea trees have an important position in Phu Tho province’s agricultural economic structure. The province plans to promoting investment and development of tea as its key crops with high economic value for export and to create stable income for local people.

Phu Tho tea industry has many bright spots with the formation and development of 70 concentrated tea production areas with a total area of 5,800 hectares in the districts of Thanh Son, Tan Son, Cam Khe, Yen Lap, Thanh Ba, Ha Hoa, Doan Hung, Phu Ninh, and Phu Tho town. There are 60 tea processing establishments in Phu Tho, which can process over 1 ton of fresh tea leaves per day. Nearly half of them have applied ISO, HACC quality management systems. There are also 15 cooperatives, 18 craft villages, and 785 households processing tea. Black tea output accounts for about 70% of the total processed tea output (48,000 tons/year).

Phu Tho tea is mainly sold to the Middle East, India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia, the UK, and Russia.

To restructure the tea industry, the agricultural sector and localities in Phu Tho province have reviewed and arranged tea processing facilities. The local government has issued many policies supporting tea production and processing to improve the quality and value of Phu Tho tea products. Particularly, the authorities have assisted 15 small and medium-sized enterprises to innovate green and balck tea drying and classifying technology. Support has been also given to 14 cooperatives, 18 craft villages, 1 tea production and processing farm and 897 small craft processing establishments.

In addition, some tea processing factories have linked production with cooperatives and tea growers to ensure a stable source of raw materials and control the quality of finished tea products. Many businesses, craft villages, and cooperatives producing and processing green tea have had their brands protected by the intellectual property authorities.

Currently, in addition to planning safe tea areas, the province has built tea production models under the Project "Improving quality and safety of agricultural products" (QSEAP), focusing mainly on key districts. This is the basis for attracting investment in the production of high-quality, high-value tea goods. In particular, the province focuses on building safe tea material production areas in an organic direction, limiting the use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides; Applying good agricultural practices (GAP), from production to final product processing and aiming to production of organic tea production in the near future.

The province also pays attention to developing agricultural products and OCOP products through trade promotion activities for OCOP products and typical agricultural and rural products with the potential to become OCOP products.

Mr. Tran Tu Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phu Tho province, said that to build the brand "Phu Tho Tea", localities need to continue restructuring the tea industry towards improving efficiency, sustainable development of relationships between production, processing and consumption of products while arranging processing facilities, innovating quipment and technology, diversifying products, improving quality and ensuring food safety.

At the recent trade connection conference between tea suppliers in the Northeast region and tea exporters and trade promotion organizations on April 24, Vice Chairman of Phu Tho Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Hai said that the Northeast region is the largest tea production, processing and export region in the country. The potential for developing trade and exporting tea products in the Northeast region in general and Phu Tho province in particular is huge. The tea industry has brought economic value, which can create jobs and bring income for people, contributing to promoting local economies.

In the coming time, to meet the requirements of commercial development of the tea industry, Phu Tho province asked that the Departments of Industry and Trade of provinces in the Northeast region continue to promote their role as a bridge with Departments of Industry and Trade in the region, Ambassadors, Counsellors, and Vietnam’s overseas trade offices to expand consumption markets, promote brands and increase the value of Vietnamese tea.
