Dustin Cheverier (first right) and his parents enjoy banh xeo

Dustin Cheverier from southern California, is one of the well known travel bloggers with a YouTube channel. He has 790,000 followers. He has been living in Vietnam for nine years and shares videos about his life, travel and meals in Vietnam, from the north to the south.

Dustin once rode a bicycle from Vietnam to Thailand and Laos when he was 20 years old.  After the journey, he decided to come as a volunteer to Vietnam and has been here since 2014.

The American man noted that Vietnam has many advantages to attract tourists, from cuisine to culture to natural landscapes. He wants to contribute to popularizing the images of the country through the videos he posts on his channel.

Dustin also inspires his friends and relatives, who live 13,000 kilometers from him, to travel and make discoveries.

Most recently, the young blogger invited his parents to Vietnam and spent time sightseeing, experiencing the culture, food and life in Vietnam.

During the three-week stay in Vietnam, Dustin’s parents were led by their son to many places throughout the country to enjoy delicious dishes and local specialties.

In HCM City, where Dustin lives, they had the chance to taste many street dishes which had low prices but high quality. One of the street dishes they enjoyed the most was banh xeo.

Dustin led his parents to a banh xeo shop located on a small alley on Dinh Cong Trang street in District 1, near Tan Dinh Church. This has been a well-known eatery for locals and expats in HCM City for many years.

Dustin revealed that he likes banh xeo a lot, but this was the first time he enjoyed it with his parents. They were eager to enjoy the popular street dish.

While waiting to be served, they could watch how the banh xeo was prepared.

To satisfy customers’ diverse tastes, the shop serves many types of banh xeo. A normal portion of banh xeo is priced at VND110,000 per serving, while a special portion is VND180,000 with a lot of pork, big shrimp and egg stuffing, and dumplings for VND90,000.

Dustin ordered one normal serving and one special portion, which was enough for three people. He showed his parents how to eat banh xeo properly, with some raw vegetables, fennel and stuffing which are all rolled up and then dipped into sweet and sour fish sauce. The dish is accompanied by a pickle.

Dustin’s mother said the dish was very good with many flavors mixed in one roll. His father also expressed interest in the pancake that he ate for the first time in his life. They thought it was delicious because of the shrimp and lean and fatty sliced meat.

Dustin also suggested trying drinks made from lemon. The American blogger admitted to being "addicted to salted lemonade".

“At first, it tasted a little bit salty, but later, I found it sweet. The taste is really very special. I think we can’t find any similar flavor in the US,” Dustin’s father said.

During their time in Vietnam, Dustin’s parents had the chances to try many Vietnamese specialties, such as pho (noodle soup), com tam (steamed broken rice), banh my chao (baguette with combo pan), my Quang (promo noodle), and bun cha nem Hanoi (Hanoi Kebab rice noodles and spring rolls). They also tried fruits that many foreigners are wary of, such as trung vit lon (balut) and durian which has a very pungent smell.
