Construction had in fact begun last year.

It is being built on a nearly 45,000sq.m area on Nguyen Van Cu Street in Ninh Kieu District at a cost of VND1.73 trillion (over US$Eur70.5 million) with funding from ODA loans provided by the Hungarian Government.

The hospital will have advanced equipment for cancer treatment, research and training.

It is expected to become a leading centre for research and treatment of cancer, and will treat the increasing number of cancer patients in the region, according to the Can Tho Department of Health.

Its tariffs would be reasonable and correspond to the economic status of the region, the department said.

Bui Thi Le Phi, director of the department, said contractors have been identified for eight of the 12 packages of the hospital project.

Speaking at the ground-breaking, Bus Szilveszter, Hungary’s deputy minister of state, ministry of economic and foreign affairs, said the ceremony marks the start of the construction of the most advanced hospital in the Mekong Delta, which would not only diagnose and treat millions of patients in the region but also offer quality training for doctors and nurses.

He said Hungary is ready to train the Vietnamese personnel and transfer know-how in oncology research and treatment.

Vo Thanh Thong, chairman of the Can Tho People’s Committee, said the Can Tho Oncology Hospital Project is of great social significance since it would fulfil the Government’s policies on enhancing health services provided to the public.
