Mr. Nguyen Khuong Ba, Chief of the Can Tho Party Committee Office, said that the committee held a meeting to review Mr. Nguyen Huu Thinh, 39, a staff of the office, for family violence. At the meeting Thinh admitted to beat his 9-year-old child with a teaching purpose.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuong, 37, a resident of Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City, said that after 10 years living with Mr. Thinh, with two children, in late 2011 she filed for divorce because of suspecting Thinh’s unfaithfulness and asked for the right to take care of the two children.

A year ago, the court solved the case and allowed the divorce, but the judgment was appealed for procedural violations. In June 2012, the Can Tho City People's Court announced to annual the verdict. During this period, the two children lived with Phuong. Thinh moved from the house.

On May 14, Thinh took the kids to his home. That night, the boy named Huu cried when his dad turned off the lights so was beaten by his father, with bruises left on his cheeks, his arms and his back. The next morning, Phuong took the kid to the hospital for medical check.

Thinh said he had never beaten or quarreled with his wife and his kids because he is an intellectual. However, Phuong said her husband once beat her, leaving bruises on her eye and face.
