Thanh’s journey has been filled with challenges, from near-death experiences in his childhood to a lifetime of perseverance despite interruptions in his education. Born into a poor laboring family, Thanh's passion for learning never waned, even as his studies were halted for five decades.

During the ceremony, Dr. Tran Trung Tinh, the President of Can Tho University, acknowledged Thanh’s remarkable spirit. "Today, we have a very special student, Mr. Nguyen Tan Thanh, who exemplifies a lifelong commitment to education," he remarked.

The university awarded Thanh the "Lifetime Learning Spirit" scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year, valued at 24 million VND, to support his academic endeavors.

Thanh recounted his life's hardships, including almost drowning and being bitten by a rabid dog. Despite his family's poverty and numerous obstacles, his passion for learning remained strong. His academic journey was interrupted when his mentor passed away just as he was about to complete his master's thesis in 1975. Family responsibilities further delayed his education, especially after the death of his wife, which left him to raise four young children alone.

Now that his children are grown and successful, with three becoming teachers, Thanh has resumed his academic pursuits. "Even at my age, I am determined to continue my education and fulfill my dream of earning a master's degree," Thanh said.

Thanh’s story serves as a powerful message about the importance of lifelong learning. "Learning is a lifelong endeavor and a path with no end," he stated. He hopes to inspire younger generations to pursue their education with seriousness and determination.

With his master's degree, Thanh aims to further his research and contribute more significantly to literature, culture, and education. "Culture and the arts are vast and ever-evolving fields that require continuous learning," he said. He plans to pursue a doctorate if his health permits, continuing his journey of lifelong learning.
