Sean began his journey of discovering Asia several months ago. After traveling to Cambodia, he set foot in Vietnam and spent one month in the country to experience its culture and food in HCM City.
“Finally, I could fulfil my dream of traveling to Vietnam and enjoying the famous beef noodle soup,” he said.
Sean chose a sidewalk eatery at the intersection of Pham Ngu Lao in district 1 that specializes in beef pho and braised beef.
He arrived at 1pm and was surprised that there were still many diners enjoying their lunch.
Sean ordered beef pho, priced at VND80,000, and was given a glass of lemon juice. He noted that at Vietnamese pho restaurants, there are always spices and greens for diners to use as they want.
When a waiter brought a hot bowl of pho, Sean immediately tasted the broth and nodded repeatedly showing his satisfaction.
After that, he added garlic vinegar, lemon, herbs and bean sprouts. He said he wanted to enjoy pho like a native man, so he tried all kinds of spices and herbs except chili sauce.
The bowl was very filling, with rare and well-done beef, sliced into thin, bite-sized pieces. The noodles were a bit different; they looked similar to vermicelli because they were a bit smaller in size and not as flat as usual.
The Canadian diner commented that the broth was even better when adding spices. The beef was tender and fresh and the aromatic herbs had an attractive flavor.
He said the beef pho was even more delicious than expected and that Vietnam pho was the dish he had wanted to taste all his life.
During his trip to Vietnam, the Canadian traveler spent time discovering HCM City and Da Lat. He regretted that he couldn’t visit all attractions and taste all dishes, but he was satisfied because "the landscapes are beautiful, people are friendly, and the food is delicious".
