Thirty-seven train drivers for the Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro route in Hanoi have been sent to China for training courses as the line is scheduled to begin services in April 2019.

According to Vu Hong Truong, General Director of the Hanoi Railway One Member Limited Company, up to 681 engineers and workers have been used for the 13-kilometre route.  

Of these, 201 people, including 37 train drivers, were sent to China to participate in training courses. Since early this year, they have been able to drive trains on the route.

Truong said the experiences of operating the Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro project in Hanoi would be used as the template for future metro projects.

The Cat Linh-Ha Dong railway project has cost more than VND20 trillion (USD886 million) sourced from official development assistance loans from China.

The project has 12 stations and one depot area. The railway is set to operate trains with a service frequency of every two minutes and a maximum speed of 80 kilometres per hour.

Construction on the project was meant to start in 2008 but was delayed until October 2011. The line was originally expected to start running in November 2013.
