The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recently conducted a thorough review of the food hygiene and safety management system pertaining to Vietnamese tra fish exports to the United States.
Vietnamese pangasius exports are showing positive signs in several key markets such as China, Hong Kong (China), and the United States, with the product forecast to hit over US$1.7 billion this year.
A Chinese trader has imported 500 containers of tra fish weighing 12,000 tonnes from Vietnam right after China’s lifting of its zero-COVID policy, showing a positive signal for the sector this year.
In January 2023, catfish exports brought $106.8 million to Vietnam, a 50 percent fall compared with the same period last year. However, Vietnamese farmers and exporters now see positive signs from the US and China.
More than 90% of Tra fish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) available in the US market comes from Vietnam, said Vietnamese Trade Counsellor in the US Do Ngoc Hung citing statistics from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Export prices have been escalating in all markets and hitting new records in the US. Vietnam’s catfish export turnover is expected to reach $2.6 billion this year, the highest in history.
