VietNamNet Bridge - Many households in the central provinces of Quang Ngai and Quang Nam have sold their cattle and gold to spend because of the rumors about the "doomsday." The local authorities have conducted investigations to find out who spread the rumors.

At the Sa Ky fishing port in Binh Chau commune, Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province on the morning of December 18, many people talked about the "doomsday."

Ms. Dung, a fish trader at Binh Chau market, said that everyone in the market are worried that everybody would die on December 21 so they told each other to sell pigs, chickens, cows and gold to spend and enjoy life before the “doomsday.”

"They said that they have to be hedonistic before the day of the end of the world," Dung said.

According to some traders at the market, a few days ago a woman from Tinh Hoa commune, Son Tinh district, sold 10 taels of gold to a gold shop in the market to buy a lot of meat, rice, noodles, candles, kerosene, etc. to use before the “doomsday.”

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Vice Chairman of Binh Chau commune, confirmed that in these days, fearing of "the end of the world," many people bought instant noodles and food for reserves. The local government has sent officials to villages to explain about the unfounded rumors, but people still doubt.

In Duc Loi commune, Mo Duc district, Quang Ngai province, it is rumored that many people have sold pigs and chickens to spend. Mr. Le Thanh Phach, Chairman of Duc Loi commune, said that there could be some bad guys spreading rumors for profiteering in the acquisition of pigs and cows at cheap prices.

Quang Ngai police are investigating to verify who spread the rumors."We will arrest and punish anyone who is detected to spread malicious rumors in order to take advantage of the trust of the people to seek profit," said a representative of the Quang Ngai Police Agency.

In Quang Nam province, Mr. Dang Phong, Chairman of Bac Tra My district, said people in the district are also in turmoil because of the rumors on the "end of the world." They are worried about the "match" between the earthquakes in the region and the rumors.

"It is most worried that the bad guys depend on the earthquakes in Song Tranh 2 hydro-power plant to confuse people. Last month there was the rumors of the breaking of Song Tranh 2 dam, that urged some households to sell cattle," said Phong.

In early December, a number of households in Tien My commune, Tien Phuoc district of Quang Nam province sold cattle for the fear of the "doomsday."
