In the tradition room of Nguyen Gia Thieu High School in Hanoi, images of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong from his student days are still prominently displayed.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was a student at Nguyen Gia Thieu High School (Long Bien District, Hanoi), graduating in the class of 1957-1963. He was both the class president and the Secretary of the Youth Union for classes 9B and 10B.
In 2020, the school celebrated its 70th anniversary. The school principal, Mr. Le Trung Kien, recalled how he was honored to personally invite General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, and was deeply moved when the General Secretary addressed him as “teacher” and referred to himself as “Nguyen Phu Trong” rather than using his official titles.
Mr. Kien reminisced: “When we invited him to the anniversary celebration, he told us, ‘Please report to the teachers and school that while I am the General Secretary and President (as of 2020), when I return to school, I am still Nguyen Phu Trong, a former student.’”
During the event, the General Secretary also reflected on his school years and expressed his desire to meet his former teachers and classmates in a humble capacity, setting aside his official status.
Mr. Kien described General Secretary Trong as modest and respectful, emphasizing that he did not expect special treatment despite his high position. His humility and dedication to the principles of respect and propriety were evident in his interactions with his former teachers.
At the 70th anniversary event, General Secretary Trong presented flowers to his former teacher, Mr. Le Duc Giang, who had been his homeroom teacher in class 10B. He also shared nostalgic stories about his school days with friends and teachers.
Mr. Kien fondly recalled General Secretary Trong’s dedication, including his daily commute from Lai Da village (Dong Anh District, Hanoi) to school, which involved crossing a ferry and walking for hours to reach the school by 5am.
"Back then, the entire Gia Lam and Dong Anh districts only had Nguyen Gia Thieu School. Without a clock, there were days when he would leave at 3am, reach the ferry at 4am, and arrive at school by 5am when everyone else was still asleep. These memories evoke a deep sense of admiration and respect among the teachers and students of our school for the General Secretary," Mr. Kien recounted.
The tradition room at Nguyen Gia Thieu High School still holds a wealth of memories from the time when Nguyen Phu Trong was a student there.
Nguyen Gia Thieu School (now Nguyen Gia Thieu High School) was established in 1950 in Lac Tho village, Thuan Thanh district, Bac Ninh. In 1951, the school moved to its current location at No. 27, Alley 298 Ngoc Lam, Long Bien district, Hanoi.
Currently, the school has about 2,000 students each year; 100% of the teachers are fully qualified, with over 55% holding advanced degrees.
In recent years, Nguyen Gia Thieu High School has consistently ranked among the top high schools in Hanoi with the highest entrance exam scores for grade 10. This year, the school boasts a national valedictorian in the high school graduation exams, Nguyen Ha Nhi from class 12D1.
