The accident happened Wednesday afternoon at an intersection in Tây Hồ, Hà Nội.
Nguyễn Đình Khuyến, Chairman of Tây Hồ District People’s Committee, said a car driven by a 63-year-old man caused the collision at the Xuân La–Võ Chí Công junction.
There were at least 17 motorbikes struck by the vehicle.
Authorities say five people suffered broken bones after the crash, and two are in a serious condition.
One of those badly injured is a three-year-old child who has been taken to Việt Nam National Children’s Hospital with brain injuries and was undergoing surgery Wednesday evening.
A 14-year-old child has also been transported to the same facility but the extent of their injuries are not known.
The rest of the people hurt in the accident suffered minor injuries and were taken to Hà Nội Heart Hospital, Facility 2 on Xuân La Street before being transferred to the General Hospital E.
Police have said the driver of the car was not driving under the influence of alcohol and was taking his wife back home to Long Biên after a hospital appointment.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. VNS
