According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from the night of April 28, the cold air is forecast to affect the northeastern region before expanding to the north-central area and parts of the northwest and central regions.

Cooler conditions, mountains below 20°C

During this cold spell, winds will shift to the northeast at levels 2-3 inland and 3-4 in coastal areas.

Temperatures in northern Vietnam are expected to drop to 20-23°C, with mountainous areas falling below 20°C. The north-central region will see temperatures between 21 and 24°C.

In Hanoi, from the evening of April 28 to the morning of April 29, showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected, with some areas experiencing heavy rain. The lowest temperatures will range between 22 and 24°C, creating noticeably cooler conditions.

Warnings of storms and hazardous weather

Meteorological authorities have warned of accompanying extreme weather conditions.

From the evening of April 28 to the morning of April 29, northern Vietnam will see light to moderate rain and scattered thunderstorms, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall. On April 29, the rain band is expected to shift toward the north-central region.

Afterward, northern areas will see only scattered showers. From May 1 to May 2, sunny conditions are expected during the day, and from May 3, localized heat may return.

Earlier, on the evening and night of April 27, northern regions and Thanh Hoa were forecast to experience scattered showers with rainfall ranging from 10 to 30 mm, and some areas exceeding 70 mm.

Residents are advised to remain alert to the risk of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds, which could damage property, disrupt transportation, and negatively affect agricultural production.

At sea, from early April 29, the northern Gulf of Tonkin and northern areas of the East Sea will experience northeast winds at force 5-6, gusting to 7, with wave heights between 1.5 and 2.5 meters, creating rough conditions dangerous for vessels.

Sunny weather returns during holiday, heat likely to intensify

Following the cold spell and widespread thunderstorms between April 28 and 29, weather conditions are expected to improve just before the official April 30 - May 1 holiday period (April 30 to May 3, 2026).

By April 30, rain will decrease rapidly, skies will clear, and sunshine will return, with temperatures gradually rising. The northwest, central, and southern regions may experience localized heat.

Across northern Vietnam, there will be isolated showers and thunderstorms, with sunny conditions during the day. By May 3, parts of the northwest may experience localized heat.

Minimum temperatures will range from 22 to 24°C, dropping below 21°C in some areas, before rising to 23-26°C from the night of May 2. Maximum temperatures will range from 28 to 31°C, increasing to 31-34°C, with some areas exceeding 35°C from May 2 onward.

In central Vietnam, from Thanh Hoa to Hue, April 30 may see scattered showers, especially in southern areas. From May 1, sunny conditions will dominate, with localized heat possible by May 3. Afternoon and evening showers may still occur.

Temperatures will range from 22-25°C at night, rising to 24-27°C after May 2, while daytime highs will increase from 27-30°C to 32-34°C, with some areas exceeding 35°C.

From Da Nang to Binh Thuan, April 30 will bring scattered rain in northern areas. From May 1, sunny weather will prevail, with localized heat by May 3 and occasional evening thunderstorms.

The Central Highlands and southern Vietnam will see sunny conditions, with some areas experiencing heat, particularly in the south on April 30. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the late afternoon and evening.

Temperatures in these regions will range from 21-24°C in the Central Highlands and 25-28°C in the south at night, while daytime highs will reach 30-33°C, rising to 32-35°C, with some areas exceeding 35°C.

In Hanoi, the holiday period will be mostly sunny with dry nights. Temperatures will range from 22-24°C at night, increasing to 24-26°C after May 2, while daytime highs will rise from 29-31°C to 31-33°C.
