Nón or Conical Hat, a contemporary dance show featuring Vietnamese traditional music will be held in Hanoi next month for the first time.

Two artists Vu Ngoc Khai and Ngo Hong Quang performing Conical Hat temporary dance

Nón which is a project created by two Vietnamese artists, Vu Ngoc Khai and Ngo Hong Quang, was inspired by elements of Vietnamese culture, such as the conical hat, sticky rice cakes, and traditional musical instruments, including the monochord and Jewish harp.

The combination of contemporary dance and folk music not only creates a visual display of Vietnamese culture, but illustrates Vietnamese musicality.

The performance will take place at L’espace, Trang Tien Street, Hanoi at 8pm on July 26 and at the Institute for Cultural Exchange with France (Idecaf) in HCM City on July 27.

Last summer, the show was also organised in HCM City, attracting hundreds of spectators. Later, in December of the year, the dance was held in Luxembourg.

For this year’s performance, the artists Khai and Quang will use an entire song, but not just the music seen in last year’s show.

Khai is a dancer and choreographer who studied and worked in Vietnam and Europe while Quang learned various types of Vietnamese traditional instruments at Vietnam's National Academy of Music and in different mountainous areas around the country. He also studied music at Den Haag Royal Conservatory in the Netherlands.
