More specifically, recent leaks suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature a main camera with a variable aperture, while the standard iPhone 18 Pro may continue to use a fixed-aperture camera system.

If the information proves accurate, the camera would become one of the most important hardware distinctions between the two iPhone 18 Pro models, alongside the traditional differences in display size and battery capacity.

What advantage would a variable-aperture camera offer?

According to well-known tech leaker Ice Universe, Apple could reserve its variable-aperture main camera exclusively for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, leaving the smaller iPhone 18 Pro without the technology.

A variable-aperture camera can change the size of its aperture to control how much light reaches the image sensor.

Opening the aperture wider allows the camera to capture more light, potentially improving image quality when shooting in low-light conditions.

A wider aperture can also produce stronger background blur, helping the subject stand out more clearly from its surroundings.

Conversely, narrowing the aperture can increase the depth of field, allowing more elements within the frame to remain sharply in focus.

That gives a variable-aperture camera considerably more photographic flexibility than a conventional fixed-aperture system.

Why could the iPhone 18 Pro miss out?
