The Cuban Embassy in Vietnam announced that Cuban National Asssembly President Lazo Hernandez would represent the Cuban Party, State, Government, and people at the funeral of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

In their condolence message, General Raul Castro Ruz and First Secretary, President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed that the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is an irreplaceable loss for Cuba. They conveyed that Cuba will forever remember Nguyen Phu Trong as a great friend who tirelessly promoted the special friendship between the two parties, parliaments, governments, and peoples of Cuba and Vietnam.

The message highlighted, "Our beloved friend Nguyen Phu Trong will be remembered by generations of Cubans as a pillar of the long-standing traditional friendship between our two countries and as a great brother, always ready to extend solidarity to Cuba in the most challenging circumstances."

The message also recalled General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s significant visit to Cuba in March 2018, including his memorable moments in Santiago de Cuba where he paid respects to Fidel Castro Ruz, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution.

Cuba officially mourned the passing of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong from 6am on July 20 to midnight on July 21, with national mourning observed throughout July 22.

On July 19, the Cuban National Assembly observed a minute of silence during its regular session to honor Nguyen Phu Trong.

Throughout his long and successful political career, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was a fervent advocate for the special, brotherly, and mutual trust-based relationship between the parties, parliaments, governments, and peoples of Cuba and Vietnam. He made official visits to Cuba in 2012 and 2018.
