VietNamNet Bridge - Cycling machines attached to a water filtration system have been installed on the bank of the 8.7km Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal in HCM City. These have helped local people exercise, and have also kept the canal clean.
The pilot project of the four machines at the lake over the past week attracted many local residents.
The machine’s structure is similar to a bicycle but it is linked to a power generator and water filtration system. So when people use the machine, the generator will run and produce power.
The power transmitted into a battery helps the water filtration pump water from the lake into a filter tank. After being filtered, water is pumped back into the lake.
The filter tank is filled with sand, gravel and active charcoal to help absorb pollutants.
The Nhieu Loc- Thi Nghe canal which runs through five districts of District 1, District 3, Phu Nhuan District, Binh Thanh District and Tan Binh District. It received a facelift in 2012 due to serious pollution.
However, the canal remains one of the most polluted waterways in the city. Around 70 tons of dead fish were recently collected from the canal due to pollution.
