More than 220 amateur cyclists will race in the Da Nang Cycling Open-Asanzo Cup along the coast this Sunday to raise funds for victims of Agent Orange (AO) in Da Nang.

At a press conference yesterday the race’s organisers said the race will draw the best cyclists from across the nation in the largest ever amateur race.

Riders will race in the men’s 30km and 40km individual and team sprint in two age groups of 18-45 and over 45.

The 2km laps will see cyclists racing from East Sea Park winding through Vo Nguyen Giap, Hoang Sa streets and back.

More than VNĐ200 million (US$8,800) is on offer in total prize money from the organisers, who will also donate gifts to families of war invalids and martyrs.

Child victims of AO will compete in a 50m wheelchair race at 8am on Sunday, before the race begins.

The race aims to celebrate the 70th anniversary of National War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27th) and AO Victims day (August 10th).

Da Nang has more than 5,000 AO victims, of which 1,400 are children.

Last year, 250 cyclists also joined the Asanzo Cycling Cup along the Han River.
