After more than an hour of tense struggle on the rocky cliffs of Son Tra peninsula, a fisherman from Da Nang landed a massive king mackerel weighing 63kg. With help from friends, he carried the rare prize along more than 300 meters of steep mountain trail back home.

A video capturing the event quickly went viral on social media on February 3, showing the moment the fisherman and his friends triumphantly brought the fish down from the mountain.

The man behind the catch is Le Van Hai, 43, a longtime resident of Da Nang.

Speaking with VietNamNet, Hai shared that he caught the fish on the afternoon of February 1, along the rocky shores of Son Tra Peninsula in Son Tra ward.

“I was using a heavy-duty spinning rod and reel. When the fish took the bait, it leapt out of the water and bolted, pulling the line hundreds of meters out,” Hai recalled.

“I just shouted, ‘Big one hooked!’ and the fight began. It was tense and thrilling at the same time.”

After more than an hour of back-and-forth, Hai managed to bring the fish close to shore. Using a thick rope, he secured the fish to a tree and, with help from his fishing buddies, hauled the catch through more than 300 meters of rough mountain trail.

The fish measured nearly 2 meters in length and weighed in at 63kg.

Hai, who began fishing at age 6 and has spent 20 years sea fishing, considers this one of his most memorable records.

In the past, he’s landed other impressive catches, including an 80kg shark and a 16kg freshwater carp. But the king mackerel remains a standout.

“After getting the fish home, I cut it up to share with family and friends,” Hai said.
