The early warning system is the result of his year-long research efforts and creativity.
The system helped Thuong win first prize at the 2016 Science and Technology Student Competition co-organized by the Da Nang University of Technology and Da Nang Department of Science and Technology.

It is expected that Thuong will cooperate with his school and some agencies to test the early warning system in the Vu Gia – Thu Bon rivers of Quang Nam province.
Thuong said the idea of creating a warning system flashed in his idea when he heard the news about the serious damage to people in the flood-stricken areas. Since the floods came suddenly, the people could not evacuate assets and flee from dangerous spots.
Unlike the other automatic flood warning systems being installed on rivers, Thuong’s system measures rainfall in the hillside areas and transmits the figures into the server before floods come, informing people about the risks so they can respond to natural calamities.
The early warning system has three parts – rainfall measuring stations, located in different areas on hillsides; a server; and radio station.
The rainfall measuring stations are connected with each other in a network. The data can be transmitted among them thanks to RF – radio frequency, the technology used in telecommunication, which is the ‘bridge in space’ to send/receive information.
The rainfall measuring stations should be located 10 kilometers from each other. Of these, at least one station is situated in the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) coverage. The data from other stations will be transferred to this station so as to be transmitted to the server.
When rainfall measuring stations, after processing data, discover that rainfall is higher than the allowed level, which means floods may occur, the system will display a message on the website, and send a text message (SMS) to the manager to inform them about the situation, helping release the disaster warning and get ready to respond to natural calamities. The loudspeaker system will broadcast a warning message to people living in flood-prone areas.
The special characteristic of the early warning system is that it uses solar energy, taking full advantage of the light in mountainous or midland areas, where the national electricity grid cannot reach.
With the RF, rainfall measuring stations can be located in places where there are no 2G/3G/4G waves.
In addition, the system is very convenient for managers as it can be controlled directly by smartphones or on the website.
