The incident occurred on June 23 in the central city of Da Nang.

The expectant mother named Dang Thi Thanh Nga, 21, from the central province of Quang Nam, that day called a taxi of Tien Sa taxi firm to take her from the Da Nang Center for Mothers and Children on Phan Chau Trinh Road, Da Nang city to the Da Nang Obstetrics Hospital.

After the car ran for about 5 km, Nga began labor. As the distance to the hospital is over 10km more, the driver, Nguyen Bao Quynh, 26, stopped the car to carry out the delivery.

"At that time, she was in a lot of pain and screamed loudly. Amniotic fluid also ran out so I could not continue driving. I encouraged her to be calm, take deep breaths and try to push. About more than 5 minutes later, the baby was born and he cried very loudly,” the taxi driver said.

“I asked a passer-by to hold the baby to go to the hospital with Nga. Fortunately, the mother and the baby were all healthy,” he added.

The driver said at that time many passers-by stopped to see the delivery but they could not help because they had no experience with such a task.

The driver, a young man, said he made the delivery based on what he had seen on television.

Dr. Luu Hong Tuyen of the Da Nang Obstetrics Hospital said the baby was brought to the hospital with the umbilical cord, weighing 2.9kg. Both the mother and her baby are healthy but as the baby was born in the unsafe condition he was still under watch by doctors. They are going to leave the hospital early next week.

“This is quite a rare case but because the driver reacted in time, there were no bad consequences," Dr. Tuyen said.

Tien Sa taxi company presented the young mother VND2 million ($100) and promised to give her a free ride from the hospital to her home in Quang Nam province.

The mother said the baby was her first child. As her husband worked far from home, Nga returned to her parent’s house in Da Nang to live before giving birth.

Nga said she was grateful to the driver. After paying the taxi charges, she gave him money to express her gratitude but the driver refused.
