The boat racing competition takes place from the ninth to the eleventh day of the third lunar month in Tay Tuu ward, Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi. The festival is held to commemorate tutelary god Bach Hac Tam Giang.

Before taking part in the competition, rowers offer incense at the communal house and wash their hands.

The race covers 2,000m on Thuy Giang River and attracts the participation of 150 rowers in six boats.

The six boats are numbered and distinguish themselves by placing sacred objects on the bows of each boat.

Each boat has 25 rowers, including one person who steers the boat, and one who bails out the water.

The person who strikes a wooden bell is very important as he gives strength to the rowers.

The Dam boat racing festival was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and tourism in early 2018.

The teams dedicated a month to training before the competition.
