Denmark will support Vietnam to integrate renewable energy into its electricity system

On December 21, 2017, Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh on behalf of the Vietnamese government and Charlotte Laursen, Danish Ambassador in Vietnam, signed an agreement on development co-operation under the framework of the Vietnam-Denmark Energy Partnership Programme in 2017-2020 using non-refundable ODA funded by the Danish government.

This programme, which is managed by MoIT, started in 2017 and will provide a total non-refundable ODA of DNK21.6 million (equivalent to $31.5 million) by 2020.

This agreement marked the comprehensive development of the co-operation partnership between Vietnam and Denmark in the energy sector by specifying the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding between Vietnam’s MoIT and the Danish Ministry of Energy, Climate and Building (now Ministry of Energy, Infrastructure and Climate) signed on June 18, 2015.

The programme aims to deploy carbon offsetting opportunities and reduce costs in energy systems in Vietnam. It will strengthen sustainable development of the Vietnamese energy system through technical assistance in MoIT's overal energy development strategy

The programme supports the development and analysis of long-term energy development scenarios along with using renewable energy, as well as integrate renewable energy into Vietnam's electricity system to improve economic efficiency. It will also help industrial enterprises to evolve their scale and shift to low-carbon solutions nationwide.

To deploy the above-mentioned goals, the programme consists of three components. The first component is to improve the capacity of the long-term energy sector strategy in collaboration with the Power and Renewable Energy Agency.

The second component is to promote the integration of renewable energy into the electricity system in collaboration with Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam.

The third component is to develop low-carbon solutions for the industrial sector in collaboration with the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development.
