A bridge in the northern province of Hoa Binh has severely deteriorated, threatening the lives of local people.
Ba Be Bridge has seriously deteriorated
Chi Dao Commune’s 65-metre long and 2.6-metre wide Ba Be Bridge has seen three motorbikes fall into the Buoi River from the bridge over the past month.
Bui Van Du, a local resident said he crosses the bridge four times every day. He said he had fallen from the bridge several times.
“The bridge is 20 metres above the water. Many people don’t want to use it, particularly women and children,” he added.
Chi Dao Commune is a disadvantaged commune of Lac Son District. Besides Ba Be, the locality has another bridge running over the Buoi River.
Over the past three years, Ba Be Bridge has increasingly weakened and has lots of big holes. The bridge is more dangerous in rainy days. Many local children have to stay at home as they do not dare to cross the bridge.

Chi Dao Commune uses part of its local budget along with local financial contributions to repair the bridge every year.
Chi Dao Commune’s authorities have reported the case to Lac Son District, seeking financial support to resurface the bridge. Repairing the two bridges would cost VND500 million (USD21,739), however, this sum has not yet been approved.
