Dong Nai's people fear the road will badly affect the sustainability of the jungle.

The local authorities have asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) to work with the provincial relevant departments on the feasibility of the road project, and the mismatch between the province’s plan on special-use forest development and the plan on Cat Tien National Park development.

Under the project, a road would be built in the area, while the section of the road through the Cat Tien Park would be 18 kilometers long and 6 meters wide.

It is estimated that to build that road, 10 hectares of forestland will have to be cleared.

According to the Dong Nai People’s Committee, the road will be located in the core area of Cat Tien which is now under their strict control. In principle, in the area, only small paths with the width of no more than 1.5 meters can exist.

It is estimated that to build that road, 10 hectares of forestland will have to be cleared. This will badly affect the ecosystem of the forest, while it will separate the natural forest with the Dong Nai River, thus leading to damage of the forest’s natural habitat, which will harm animals' habitat.

Cat Tien Park, located in the core area of the Dong Nai Biosphere Reserves, is expected to be recognized by UNESCO as a world natural heritage site. Chair of Dong Nai province Vo Van Chanh warned that if a road is built there, it will have affect the sustainability of Cat Tien park. This would affect the international treaties of which Vietnam is a member.

A road alongside Tri An Reservoir

The Dong Nai provincial People’s Committee has allowed IDCO, an investment & development company, to work on a project on building a road alongside the Tri An reservoir, belonging to the Dong Nai Natural & Cultural Sanctuary.

The road is expected to be 30 kilometers long and would replace Road No 761, built not a long time ago with investment capital of hundreds of billions of dong which would become the inner route of the sanctuary.

Tran Nhu Hoang, chair of IDCO, affirmed that the road designed by the company will not affect the forest.

Tran Van Mui, director of the Dong Nai Natural & Cultural Sanctuary, confirmed that the project has been suggested by the sanctuary.

“The forestland will not be influenced by the project, because the road would go through the area with sparse trees, where there is already a small path."
