Volunteers collect kilos of nails and sharp metal pieces on Highway 51 each day.

It has become a common practice to see nails and sharp metal pieces deliberately dropped on roads to damage vehicles and force drivers to use conveniently situated repair services.

Tam Phuoc commune in Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai province has established a volunteer team to fight the behavior.

The team consists of nine members and its task is collecting nails and sharp metal pieces dropped on Highway 51, one of the main roads in Dong Nai.

The team, led by Mr. Nguyen Huu Loi, a local man, will also take measures to prevent nail spreaders. This force will work under the support and protection of local police.

These volunteers use magnet tools to collect nails and scrap metal pieces on the road every night.

In June, Dong Nai authorities gave VND2 million bonus and certificates of merit to a group of volunteers who collected nails on the road.

Many people have suggested that the government increase the penalty on nail spreaders or even consider them as criminal cases.

Those who commit the crime are currently fined only several million VND, not enough to prevent them from repeating the act.
